Newsweek: How Congress Keeps Screwing Up Education →
girloffscript: mustamuseme: How disappointing. Rigid “last hired, first fired” rules are a disaster for schoolchildren. They mean that across the country, teachers of the year will be pink-slipped simply because they are young. Yep—some of our very best teachers will be driven out of the profession. Meanwhile, older, incompetent teachers will be kept on. That’s unconscionable. We now know...

MeTA musings: How do you remediate?
How do you remediate? So, you’re using standards-based grading.  Rather than recording quizzes and tests by name, you record numbers on some sort of sliding scale connected with a narrative to describe how each student is doing related to specific learning targets.  Next comes the hard part:  How do you handle student re-assessments? via mctownsley.blogspot.com I read this posting...

Optical character recognition (OCR) in Google Docs...
For the technically curious: we’re using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) that our friends from Google Books helped us set up. OCR works best with high-resolution images, and not all formatting may be preserved. via googledocs.blogspot.com This is great news! Well maybe not for OCR software makers… I can see this being a great free tool for students and for educators…Yay for...

Drawings of Scientists
Who’s the Scientist? Seventh graders describe scientists before and after a visit to Fermilab. via ed.fnal.gov Wonderful fun here. . . it is obvious that these kid’s lives were changed for the better. Much to my chagrin, if you ask a lot of kids these days what they want to be, it is sad to find that not many will say things like scientist any more. Posted via email ...

A Classroom Management Plan That Works | Smart...
A classroom management plan is a contract you make with your students that promises you will protect their right to learn and enjoy school without interference. And once it’s presented to your class, you’re bound by this contract to follow it every minute of every day and without exception. Otherwise, if you don’t, you’re breaking your word—and your students’ trust. A classroom management...

Confessions from the Couch » New Late Work Policy
via missteacha.com Over at missteacha, she gave out a good recommendation on what to do when you don’t receive your work back from your students. Loved reading about her new makeup policy, makes me think a little about next year myself and what I need to do. Head on over there and give her your comments - she runs a great blog. What Does Showing Students How College May Affect...
Of course, the key way to help students see the importance of college and learning is not just by showing them a bunch of statistics, but developing a relationship with them; learning their hopes and dreams for the future; and help them see how in many areas — not just economically — furthering their academic career will help them achieve their goals. These materials are just a few tools that...

Got my son’s compass math placement score. He just finished 10th grade. He scored high enough on the test where it says he should skip straight to calculus 1. The test proctor said it was the highest score she’d ever seen any high school student make (and she’d been there a while) He scored almost perfect on the algebra section. He scored a high “B” on the college...

A Progressive Participle: 5 weeks, 2 days →
You must teach middle school. I feel the same way. The girls were gone for various reasons most of the day, and the boys and I had SO much fun. They are just less tense and bothered without the girls agitating and picking and being catty. We rallied behind their absences and got everything done (and done well) really fast and then felt really good…

Doctors. . .
About three weeks ago, I decided to get a doctor. After all, I pay health insurance and I never had a doc. So I get one and schedule and appointment. The reason was I noticed that my pressure was a little high at the last employee wellness check. I’m 35 and figured what the heck - I’ll go. Anyway, I go and I get prescribed some meds for the high blood pressure. A week later, I could...
